Cr Anne Jones returns as mayor of Wellington

Cr Jones returns to the chair afterbeing out of the top job for three years.

Cr Jones challenged the incumbent Cr Rod Buhr and when the votes were level at four-all, returning officer acting council general manager Karen Roberts,drew thenames from a box.

‘’I thank those who have supported me today,’’

‘’I hope to earn your respect and trust in this 12 months,’’ Cr Jones said.

The draw was forced after Cr Pip Smith decided not to vote for the mayoral position.

‘’I have made my decision based on my own principles and integrity and am sorry that tonight I am abstaining from voting because after speaking with all councillors I have lost confidence in both candidates that are standing for the mayoral position to lead us as a united group,’’ Cr Smith.

Howevershe said she would continue to take her role as a councillor seriously and make all decisions with the best interests of the Wellington community at heart.

“Whateverthe outcome of the votethe newly elected mayor will have my full support,” she said.

Wellington’s new deputy mayor Cr Graham Cross with Cr Marcus Hanney

Cr Graham Cross was named deputy. He won a three way race over the incumbent Cr David Grant and Cr Mark Griggs.

Cr Grant received four votes in the first run off, Cr Cross three, Cr Griggs two.

Councillors Cross and Grantwere forced into a second round.This time it was unclear if Cr Smith did not vote but it was again four-all.

Cr Grant acknowledged the work of Cr Buhr as mayor for past three years, adding that he led council through the difficult decisions that had to be made as part of the Fit for the Future process.

Cr Jones agreed ”It hasn’t been an easy job,”

”We can move forward and make open and transparent decisions for the community.” she said.

Cr Jones said she was looking forward to working with Cr Cross as her deputy and was looking to him for support.
