Firies extinguish riverbank grass fires

QUEANBEYAN firefightershave extinguished two deliberately litgrass fires at Dane Streetthis morning.

The fire station received a call from a member of public reporting a fire down near the riverbank at about 11.15am today.

Fire officers attended the scene and extinguished the firewhich measured about 20 metres by 20 metres.

Station commander Cory Wilkinson saidthe crewspotted another fire about 300 metres down the riverbank and put out the flames.

A passersby told the fire officers theyhad seen three youths in the vicinity before the incidences.

“This is very disappointing behaviour,” Station commander Wilkinsonsaid.

“Although the fires were pretty small they were obviouslydeliberatelylit and could havespread up hill tohousesnearby.”

Station commander Wilkinson commended the public for their involvement in reporting the fire. He encouraged community members to remain vigilant and notify emergency services of any fires.

“We rely on the public for information especially when it comes to areas like the riverbank which are more difficult to access,” he said.
