Swinging axes, high jumping dogs and beaut utes blowing smoke out of exhaust pipes are just some of the attractions many of us look forward to seeing.

Others prefer a trip along memory lane, marvelling at the pristine show cattle, sheep, poultry and produce.

But one thing you may not have seen before at the Merriwa show is Paul Kirk.

A self confessed ‘snake man’, Paul is travelling from Dubbo with a boot full of squirming loot.

“I have been fascinated by snakes since I was a boy growing up in England, watching grass snakes duck in and out of the water in the canals,” he said.

“I have always kept snakes as a hobby, but decided to turn it into a career when I left the British Forces 15 years ago.

“Today I have around 50 snakes, many of them venomous but also a few pythons, which I let the crowds cuddle if they want to.”

According to Paul, not all his crowds are ‘brave’ enough to handle a slippery reptile.

“I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard dad yell out ‘give it to Johnny, give it to Johnny’ and then when Johnny hands the snake over to dad he goes troppo,” Paul said.

“Not everyone likes snakes, but most people find them intriguing.

“I find them magical, and at 76 years of age, they help me get out of bed every morning,” he said.

The ‘snake man’ is one of several feature acts this year including main act ‘Rooftop Express’, an arena spectacular from Queensland showcasing Australianstockmen and women.

With only a week to go, circle next Saturday, September 19 on the calendar for a great day out at the Merriwa Show for the whole family.

A weekend three day pass is $30 a family, a family one day pass is $20, or $10 for adults and $5 per child.
