With the support of our major sponsors the Whyalla News, Drummond Golf and McLeod’s Whyalla Motor Company, the 36 hole two day event proved a great success amongst the 128 starters on each day. While the overall numbers were slightly down on last year, the depth of talent wasn’t.

Entries came from six Adelaide area clubs and four surrounding country clubs, all stumping up against the best local talent Whyalla has to offer.

Local legend Bozzie flew in from Darwin to make a cameo appearance.

The slick greens tested the ability of both locals and visitors with many a hard luck story of lip outs and close misses.

The wind did not appear to affect Saturday’s results with net scores of Steve Murphy 65, Lawrie McLean 69 in the A’s , Andy Worden 68, Dave Kinslow 70 in the B’s , Archie Best 71, Phil Harrison 72 in the C’s.

Some highlights of the tournament included an eagle to Aaron Roberts (1st hole) and Adam Clothier (14th hole) with Anthony Lynch sitting on the lip of the 13th for a hole in one. Archie Best’s ball was tracking to the hole on the 18th but ran out of steam missing out on the $700 on offer for a hole in one.

At the halfway mark of the Open, off the stick results were tight in all three grades. A grade Peter Armes 72, Chad McLean 73, with Nigel Morgan, Aaron Roberts and Tim Baker pushing the pace with 74, B grade Andy Worden 79 from Richard Earle 84 and Darren Blake 85, C grade John Wade 90 with Phil Harrison, Archie Best, Shaun Rouse and Shane Mills hot on his heels with 91 .

The wind was a little stronger on Sunday with the final struggle resulting in play offs for the A and B grades much to the interest of the gallery at the 19th hole. A play off with 149 each for the 36 holes between Aaron Roberts and Tim Baker (Kooyonga) who has been runner up on two past occasions, saw Aaron emerge with the Whyalla Open Trophy.

A three way play off saw Jason Markadonatos miss out with Martin Gordon winner and Paul Harris (Port Augusta) runner up in B grade with Shaun Rouse taking out C grade ahead of Paul Knight (Port Augusta).

Net handicap results for the 36 holes were: Steve Murphy 142 from Anthony Lynch 146 (A); Dave Kinslow 143 from Darren Blake 148 (B) and Doug Matchett 146 from Russ Bambridge 150 (C). Congratulations to our 2015 Open Champion Aaron Roberts and to all other winners and participants who made this a successful weekend. We thank our major sponsors The Whyalla News, Drummond Golf and McLeod’s Whyalla Motor Company, Course Manager and volunteers.
