She will also visit the historical sites of the Ranau death marches and will represent Boyup Brook at the 2016 ANZAC ceremony. Every year students who win this scholarship come back deeply moved by the tragic events.

As one of their major projects the Boyup Brook Lions Club awards a scholarship to a Boyup Brook District High School student to travel to Sandakan and participate in these memorial events.

Eight students entered this year, Taleah Della Vedova, Katrinna Shaw, MacKenzie Simons, Hannah Marsden, Millie Coole, Brodie Grant, Madison O’Connell and James Charteris. The students could choose to do a trilogy, speech or digital presentation. This year all chose to do a speech. Students are assessed in three areas, a score given by their teachers on their research, drafts and critical analyses; an interview with the judges’ panel; and a public presentation of three to five minutes. Judges Graham Bateman, Peter Lamb and Irene Jones, all from the Mandurah Lions Club, said the standard was high.

In second place was Hannah Marsden and equal third were Mackenzie Simons and Millie Coole.
