Rotary Club of Murrurundi president Robin Stanford and secretary Colin Stanford outside the Murrurundi Community Tourist Centre where they plan to construct a story board highlighting the railway in Murrurundi.

The Rotary Club of Murrurundi Inc has gained the support of the Upper Hunter Shire Council to install the story board sign outside the Murrurundi Community Tourist Centre (CTC) in coming months.

The council, through its Heritage Council, has approved $1700 in funding to allow the construction and installation of the sign, which will be similar to the story boards that exist in Taylor Park at Aberdeen.

The Murrurundi story board will feature the story of the first locomotive depot 18 in town from the late 1800s, and will be complimented by a memorial stone and plaque made from locally sourced convict stone.

Rotary Club of Murrurundi Inc secretary Colin Stanford has written the story, based on extensive research of official records as it is an area of interest for the local resident.

Mr Stanford said he is pleased the council has approved and helped fund the story board sign and he hopes to be able to erect more in the future, including one near the railway site of the original sheds.

The story board will be erected and officially opened at the Rotary Club’s event next month, which will be a tribute to Murrurundi’s Rail Employees and the History of the Great Northern Railway.

The event is planned for October 25 when there will be many displays and tributes, railway station tours, train rides around town, music stalls, a rose show, lunch and much more.

A program will be released soon and Mr Stanford encouraged everyone to go along, as it will be a great day in support of rotary.

“I also hope to create a small booklet on the early history of the Murrurundi Railway to distribute on the day,” he said.
